A Bright Start That Dimmed Too Soon

Delhi Capitals started this season with a bang – winning 4 of their first 5 matches, showing that they are serious contenders for the playoffs. But their recent match against Mumbai Indians resulted in a crushing 59-run defeat and they are now officially out of the playoff race.

What has happened in the meantime? Poor decisions, inconsistent performances and most of all – no stability at the top.

The Opening Puzzle No One Could Solve

Missed Playoff Dream

Believe it or not, DC tried seven different opening combinations this season. This isn’t experimentation – this is desperation. Their openers scored an average of just 19.23 runs – the lowest among all teams.

Coach Hemang Badani put it bluntly: “A stable opening pair is only possible when your opening pair gives you a good start.” Unfortunately, DC never found that rhythm. Experienced names like Faf du Plessis, KL Rahul and Karun Nair also couldn’t cement their place, they were moved around in the batting order more times than necessary.

Individual Sparks, But No Consistent Fire

Yes, we saw glimpses of brilliance. Karun Nair scored 89 off 40 balls against Mumbai, which was thrilling – especially the way he smashed 18 runs off a single over from Bumrah. But his form dipped drastically after that innings.

KL Rahul? Started at No. 4, opened and scored a brilliant 112 against Gujarat Titans*. But it was too little, too late – DC never built the team strategy around fixed roles.

Coach Badani even admitted that he cannot keep “feeding” the experienced players constantly – they need to read the game better themselves.

The Final Blow: 48 Runs in 2 Overs

In the match against Mumbai, DC were doing well till the last two overs of Mumbai’s innings. Mukesh Kumar and Dushmantha Chameera together conceded 48 runs, giving Mumbai the lead. Players like Surya kumar Yadav (73 runs off 43 balls) and Naman Dheer took full advantage of the poor bowling.

Badani lamented that he did not use more cutters or wide yorkers, especially on a slow pitch that did not offer room for big shots early on. And the absence of captain Axar Patel, who was ruled out due to illness, made the situation worse – especially with his all-round skills and left-handed stability in the batting line-up.

Close Games, Big Regrets

This season was not just about losing matches – they also failed to win matches they should have won. Against teams like KKR and MI, they were in the driver’s seat but let it slip away.

Badani added: “If you want to win this competition, you ideally have to finish those games. And if you don’t, you have nobody to blame but yourself.”

What’s Next?

DC’s last match is against Punjab Kings in Jaipur on May 24. Now it’s just about playing for honour – and maybe even testing out some youngsters.

For fans like me, this season is a reminder that cricket – like life – is about capitalising on the moments that come your way. Delhi Capitals had plenty of chances. Sadly, they couldn’t hold on.
